The Alice Series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

Achingly Alice *SOLD TO MIRAA*

Love is more complicated than Alice ever imagined!
Alice is on a mission - to marry off her dad and her favourite teacher, Miss Summers, so they can live happily ever after. But Miss Summers is in demand - the school principal wants to marry her too and she can't seem to make up her mind who she should be with.

How can you love two people at once? Alice can't understand it - until her friend Sam starts paying her attention. He's quiet, gentle and a terrific dancer - Alice likes being with him. But Alice has been Patrick's girlfriend for almost two years, so why is she suddenly into another guy?

Enchanting! I probably related the most to Alice in this book because of her sexual discovery and I think most girls will, too. Alice comes right out and says the stuff young girls are thinking and curious about and a lot of them are answered. If you are up tight and scared about bodily things, read this! If you're questioning where to draw the line with boys, read this! If you're wondering if you really are a womanly creature, read this! It made me feel a lot better and it probably will for you, too! - ruffledrain (Tokyo, Japan)

The Grooming of Alice *SOLD TO MIRAA*

Alice and her friends, Pamela and Elizabeth, are looking forward to the most exciting summer of their lives. To get into shape for the new school year they jog three miles a day and Alice is enjoying her volunteer job at the local hospital.

But things keep happening that Alice hadn't counted on. Her satisfaction with her job is marred by an unexpected sorrow. Her attempt to be a loyal friend to Pamela gets her in trouble with her father and brother, big time. And both she and Pamela are afraid that Elizabeth may be taking her efforts to lose weight too seriously. Could the most exciting summer of their lives be a little too exciting?

Very realistic and as good as always. Going through the period of time Alice and her friends are in The Grooming of Alice myself--the summer between 8th and 9th grade--I was startled by how well the book, in main theme at least, mirrored what for me is reality. As my friends and I have become increasingly self- and weight concious, I have wrestled with a desire to be thin(ner) and a fear of anorexia or the like. The Grooming of Alice not only addressed this, it offered a sensible but not official solution as well as girls' general fears about the normalcy of their bodies. In the same breath, it was funny as always and incorporated so many components of life, almost everyone should be able to find something to identify with. A few show-don't-tell lessons were a little too obvious, but, hey, this isn't meant to be Shakespeare. It's a good, easy, entertaining read about growing up a girl. - A customer.

Alice Alone *SOLD TO MIRAA*

Starting high school is every bit as exciting, and challenging, as Alice had hoped, and feared, it would be. Classes are more interesting, though Patrick isn t in all the same ones. And she s thrilled to have been chosen to work on the school newspaper, even though it takes up most of her free time.

But as she spends less time with her boyfriend, she realises the new girl, Penny, is moving in on him. Alice senses her relationship beginning to crumble - and with it her self-confidence. Could it be possible that Patrick likes someone else besides her?

This book was great! I finished the book the same night I got it! I wanted to finish it, so I wouldn't let myself fall asleep until I did. I was tired the next morning, but I didn't care...I finished the book, and that was all I cared about. You might want to have some tissues ready if you're the sentimental type. Some major stuff happens with Patrick and Alice - stuff everyone has been through, or will go through at some time in their life. Elizabeth's secret is bad, too, but I can't say more than that, cause that will ruin the suspense! Alice manages to come through with a clear voice. The emotions she has to go through speak so clear to everyone, that you will feel like you're Alice. Your not reading about her...you'll feel that you are her. Once again, Alice comes through clearly with feelings we all understand and have, but still manages to get through a message to us. - A customer
